Playlist – Music Memories

Funny how a melody sounds like a memory. -Eric Church (“Springsteen”)

This week’s entire playlist is inspired by that single lyric. It had me thinking about the sounds that go along with the people and the memories that impact your life. It’s an interesting journey through the past crafting together a collection of songs that directly correlate with specific people and moments in time. This is my journey. It’s an all-too brief collection celebrating ten of the relationships and friendships that have made me who I am today. So to those wonderful and amazing people – Linds, Tay, Zach, Ash, Ben, Am, Lee, Mel, JP and Scott, thank you. I know some of you still, lost some of you along the way but cherish you all.

Music of the Month: May – Brandi

Every month here at Branching Out, we take note on the past month’s music, and pick some favorites.

BRANDI:

“Born and Raised” – John Mayer (Columbia/Sony Music): My love for this album was enough to garner two reviews from material on it, including an extensive review last week on the merits of the album. My love for it hasn’t dimmed at all, making it my absolutely favorite for the month and one of the top five so far for the year. Mayer’s explorations into the Americana, bluegrass, Southern rock and blues genres are so versatile, and the tone is much more mature than many of his past ventures. I’ll keep trying to convince people to get past their predispositions and listen to it for a long time to come.
Favorite Tracks: Love is a Verb, Something Like Olivia, Shadow Days

“AM/FM” – Rita Wilson (Sing It Loud LLC/Decca Label Group): Actress, producer and Hollywood royalty Rita Wilson surprised me with the release of her summery album of cover songs early this month. Taking on classic songs from the 50s, 60s and 70s that have nearly become standards at this point, Wilson shows off her pretty voice against a light backdrop, providing the perfect soundtrack to a day floating around in a pool. Among the highlights is the often-covered Joni Mitchell classic, “River,” as well as the popular Juice Newton/Pretenders song, “Angel of the Morning.”

Favorite Tracks: All I Have to Do is Dream, Cherish, Please Come to Boston

“The Bright Side” – Meiko (Concord Music Group): Georgia native Meiko first got my attention a few years back with the release of “How Lucky We Are.” She was one of the first people to sign onto the fledgling MySpace label about four years ago, garnering enough Internet success to bolster her debut to moderate success. It is that same support that made her latest sophomore effort possible, continuing her string of airy pop songs marked by breathy vocals, fluttery pianos, simple guitars and bare percussion. It felt like a perfect record for spring with nothing overly heavy or melancholy with songs like “Stuck On You” and “I Wonder” among the best.
Favorite Tracks: Thinking Too Much, I’m Not Sorry, I Wonder

Cher will have her collection later in the week. Have a great holiday!

Playlist – Roadtripping

I recently planned a roadtrip from Albany, NY back to Chicago, with my best friend and her daughter in late June. I’ve done the trip and others like it, back and forth many times over the years, and what kept me sane between the longest state in the world, Ohio, and through the nothingness that is Indiana, was some road tunes.

In this week’s playlist, I list a few great mainstay “road” themed songs, as well as simply fun songs to hear as the highway grows longer and longer. But nothing quite feels as great as when you are  approaching a big city after miles and miles of darkness, rapidly approaching the light.

Check out this playlist on Spotify, and plan a trip of your own!

Discovery – Summer Camp

It’s no secret that I am a huge fan of surf rock, so that’s why I was excited to check out the California-based indie pop duo known as Summer Camp. With a name and a home befitting their beachy sound, Summer Camp is the perfect sort of music for the dog days of June and July (I’m pretty sure nothing good happens in August though, except maybe Cher’s birthday). With influences based in the doo-wop and Southern California Beach Boys days, their debut EP, Young, is a nice mini collection of what was to come. Whether it’s the tribute to “Jake Ryan” or the energetic beats of “Why Don’t You Stay,” it was a great preview of the band that made me want to listen to more.

That’s why I went ahead and checked out their first full-length studio record, Welcome to Condale. While some could easily write off the album as being too nostalgic, I gladly embrace the warm throwbacks and happily get lost in the punchy melodies and girly vocals. My personal favorite may be the ode to Brian Krakow (aptly titled after the waspy blonde from MSCL), which allows male vocals to take center stage. I can’t help but wonder if this is what the Frozen Embryos could have sounded like if that Tino had ever gotten it together.

Check out Summer Camp for yourself. You’ll be glad you did!
